"Homeworld 3: Fig survey results and your megalithic impact on development! on Fig" (Press release). "Embracer's Gearbox acquisition appears to have blocked Homeworld 3's Fig investment scheme".

Gearbox was acquired by Embracer Group in February 2021. Some key personnel from the original development studio Relic (now working for Blackbird Interactive) are among the teams developing the game, namely design director Rob Cunningham and score creator Paul Ruskay Along with this campaign the team allows contributors to take part in exclusive surveys, in order to determine which elements of the original trilogy were most appreciated and hence guide future development. ĭevelopers launched a successful mixed crowdfunding/investment campaign on Fig in late 2019, which went on to generate the highest donation average in the platform's history. The Remastered Collection's positive critical reviews and reception by the former active community (which had remained somewhat active with the use of extensively modded versions of initial games) as well as the Deserts of Kharak's respectable performance were enough to convince publisher Gearbox and the affiliated development studio Blackbird Interactive to follow up with the creation of a new game, in direct continuity with the original saga. The announcement of Homeworld 3 follows the release of the Homeworld Remastered Collection, as well as the prequel Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak.

The franchise was dormant until 2013 when its rights were bought from THQ by Gearbox Software. Following THQ's purchase of intellectual property rights to the franchise, further developments were halted after the release of Homeworld 2 in 2003.
#Homeworld 3 gameplay series#
The initial launch of the Homeworld series dates back to 1999. The game is scheduled to be released in 4th Quarter 2022. Like, wow, a lot bigger than the older Homeworld games, with platforms and ships and battles that dwarf those we’re used to seeing.Homeworld 3 is an upcoming real-time strategy video game being developed by Blackbird Interactive and published by Gearbox Software. I don’t know if the game is OK, since I haven’t played it and won’t be for a while, but we can at least finally see how it’s shaping up in this first gameplay trailer, and it looks big. I was worried! That was a very long time to have shown practically nothing from the game - mostly down to the fact they announced Homeworld 3 months/years before other games would have whipped the covers off - and as someone with a deep love of Homeworld I think I just needed to know that everything was OK. Which shouldn’t have been a problem for a direct sequel to one of the most beloved strategy series of all time, but then this is exactly what happens when you announce a game way too soon! This short video of a Railgun Frigate blowing a hole in another ship is brief, silent and very much a work-in-progress, to the point where you wonder why they’re showing it at all.Įxcept, you know, they must figure they need to show something, even as a proof of life, or just as a reminder that hey, we announced this game, please remember us.

It’s been over two years since Homeworld 3 was first announced, and things had gotten so quiet on the publicity front that earlier this year I wrote a whole blog about footage of a single ship firing a weapon.
